Packers' Veteran Defensive End Mike Daniels Sacked, Turns A Free Agent!
Amid of the upcoming NFL season starting kick-off against Chicago Bears, Packers didn't hesitate to lose its defensive end. The Packers waived its veteran defensive wall Mike Daniels after 7 NFL seasons. On July 24, 2019, Wednesday, the NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported the release of the 30-year-old footballer, just a day after Packers signed a 3-year contract worth $20.325 million with defensive end Dean Lowry. Mike, the 2012 NFL Draft by Packers recorded 271 QB and a total of 29 Sacks for the team. Though, with a foot injury, he missed out 6 of the final games last season resulting in the snap-out to cover up young and versatile players. The Packers' coach Matt LaFleur said:
I’ve been around Mike for a short period of time. I know he’s meant a lot to this community, he’s meant a lot to this football team. Obviously, having to prepare for him in the past, I still think he’s a really good player. I wish him well.
Furthermore, LaFleur added:
We feel really, really good about the group we have with Kenny Clark, with Lancaster, Lowry, Montravius Adams, Keke and Fadol Brown. Just the versatility that Rashan and Za’Darius bring to us. So we feel like we have a group in place that can get the job done.
As per PackersNews.com, the team previously tried to trade the 2017 Pro-Bowler but was an unsuccessful attempt. Since Mike Daniels reportedly was $8.1 million due in 2019's base salary & bonuses, the Packers now saves $8.3 million in cap space for further contract singings/extensions. The former Green Bay Packers was originally on a 4-year deal signed on December 14, 2015, worth $41.5 million.
