Holder: After his performance against the Jaguars, Jameis Winston will be named the Saints’ starting quarterback.

NEW ORLEANS — On Monday night, the world watched as Drew Brees’ replacement was crowned.
When the Green Bay Packers visit New Orleans in Week 1, Jameis Winston will be the starting quarterback. If not…well, there is no “if not” scenario. There was never a point this offseason when I felt Taysom Hill would beat Winston out for the position.
Throughout training camp and the first two preseason games, I’ve been anticipating Winston’s “win the job” moment.
Several Who Dats were perplexed as to why Winston and Hill’s debate remained a debate at all.
Hill gave a viable force to Winston during the preseason version of “Monday Night Football,” but Winston’s dominating performance should push Hill back into the Swiss Army Knife role, which will still serve as a key asset to the offense.Winston detonated during the Saints 23-21 win against the Jags in the preseason version of “Monday Night Football.”
He had a passer rating of 157.5 after completing nine of ten passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
Can I say that was reminiscent of Brees?
It had been
Nevertheless, you must consider that this occurred in the first quarter of a preseason game against the NFL’s weakest club last season.

Jameis Winston vs. Taysom Hill in the New Orleans Saints Training Camp QB Fight by the Odds

The latest betting odds on who will emerge victorious from the New Orleans Saints’ training camp quarterback competition.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, captained by Tom Brady, are not only the defending Super Bowl Champions and the clear class of the NFC South, but are also one of the strong favorites to win it all again in 2021, according to oddsmakers.
After acquiring quarterback Sam Darnold from the New York Jets in the summer, the Carolina Panthers are expecting to go through some growing pains as they try to revitalize his career.
The Atlanta Falcons, who are predicted to be proficient on offense thanks to Matt Ryan’s leadership, are still only power regarded as an average club with a 7.5 season victory total in Las Vegas sportsbooks.
The New Orleans Saints, on the other hand, will have to decide whether to start veteran Jameis Winston or the versatile Taysom Hill.
Winston has been given astronomical odds of -360 to replace the retired Drew Brees as the starting quarterback in Week 1 by oddsmakers.
Jameis Winston (-360) is widely favored as the Saints’ Week 1 starting quarterback when they meet the Green Bay Packers as 2.5-point home underdogs. Hingle/USA TODAY Sports
Last season, the veteran only passed for 75 yards while filling in for Brees on a limited basis.
In six seasons in the NFL, the former Florida State quarterback has passed for 19,812 yards and 121 touchdowns.
Winston, on the other hand, has battled with ball security.
He has thrown a whopping 88 interceptions in just 76 games.
Winston went 28-42 in 70 career starts, with his only winning record coming in 2016 (9-7) as my colleague Shawn Childs pointed out in his Saints fantasy team preview.
Winston lead the NFL in passing yards (5,109) and attempts (626) in 2019, but his astronomically high amount of interceptions (30 – eighth all-time) keeps his opponents in games far too often.
Taysom Hill (+255) has turned into one of the NFL’s most dangerous and versatile players, lining up at quarterback, wide receiver, running back, and tight end for the Saints.
Hill carried for 457 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground last season, while also catching eight passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.
In his enlarged role as quarterback, the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ showed accuracy as well, completing 72.7% of his passes for 928 yards and four touchdowns.
In 2021, Childs predicts the Saints will use a two-quarterback system for the majority of the season: In 2021, New Orleans will cycle two quarterbacks.
With Drew Brees sidelined last season, Hill had a chance to prove he belonged as the team’s starting quarterback.
Ian Book (+5000) was a great quarterback for Notre Dame throughout his collegiate career, throwing for 8,948 yards and 72 touchdowns. He was taken in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
To even see the field in his debut season, Book would require an injury to either Winston or Hill.
Book’s enormous +5000 odds should not tempt bettors to back him for anything other than a backup role in 2021.
Finding a solid starting quarterback in the NFL is difficult enough, but replacing a Hall of Famer at the position raises the stakes much higher.
Winston is expected to take over in early rounds this summer given to his experience as a pocket passer.
As we often emphasize, laying prohibitive odds is not a good strategy to manage your bankroll.
Despite the possibility that Winston may start in Week 1, this is a risky wagering market.
It’s worth noting that this market was -200 in Winston’s favor back in early May.
Because to his hybrid versatility with several spots and great support from head coach Sean Payton, Hill is now the best bargain at his excellent +255 odds.

According to a source, Chris Hogan has reached an agreement with the New Orleans Saints.

METAIRIE, LA METAIRIE, LA METAIRIE, LA
— Veteran wide receiver Chris Hogan will return to the NFL after moonlighting as a lacrosse player this summer, hoping to help the New Orleans Saints make up for the loss of injured star Michael Thomas.
A source told ESPN’s Mike Reiss that Hogan, 33, agreed to a deal with the Saints on Monday, confirming an NFL Network report.
Thomas was officially placed on the physically unable to play list on Monday, as expected, to begin training camp.
Following ankle surgery in June, he is anticipated to lose time at the start of the regular season.
After the Saints dismissed veteran Emmanuel Sanders this offseason, Hogan (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) will compete for a roster spot among Saints receivers Tre’Quan Smith, Deonte Harris, Marquez Callaway, and others in a position group that is light on proven quality.
Throughout a nine-year career that included stops with the Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, and New York Jets, Hogan won two Super Bowls with the New England Patriots.
But, after appearing in just 12 games with the Panthers and Jets in 2019 and 2020 due to injuries, he briefly considered switching jobs and playing in the Premier Lacrosse League this offseason before being enticed back by the Saints.
Hogan was a standout lacrosse player at Penn State before transferring to Monmouth to play football for a year before joining the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2012.
During his tenure in the PLL, he was relatively inactive, starting with the Cannons before being traded to the Whipsnakes.
Hogan, now back in the NFL, provides variety to the table in addition to his experience.
During the regular season, he lined up roughly equally in the slot and out wide, catching 216 catches for 2,795 yards and 18 touchdowns.
In the playoffs, he has 34 catches for 542 yards and four touchdowns.

Michael Thomas, a wide receiver with the New Orleans Saints, will miss the start of the season.

Michael Thomas in action against the Bears last season (AP) According to reports, the ankle injury that hampered New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas last season may keep him from making his debut in 2021.
Thomas “may be on the sideline for weeks” to begin the season, according to NFL Network, as he recovers from offseason surgery.
According to the report, the suggested rehab period following his June procedure to repair ligaments in his left ankle is four months.
Thomas was hurt in the 2020 opening and ended up receiving just 40 passes for 438 yards and zero touchdowns in seven games after breaking an NFL single-season record with 149 receptions for a league-leading 1,725 yards in 2019.

It was his first game without a catch in his five-year career.
Thomas, a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, has 510 receptions for 5,950 yards and 32 touchdowns in 70 games since being picked in the second round by the Saints in 2016.
In 2019, Thomas, 28, agreed to a five-year, $96.3 million contract extension, with a basic salary of $12.6 million and a cap hit of $18.8 million in 2021.
As the Saints transition from the Drew Brees era, his absence would be a major blow to the offense.
The quarterbacks on the roster heading into training camp next week are Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, and rookie Ian Book.
