In a meaningless preseason game, Urban Meyer puts Trevor Lawrence in jeopardy.

During the Jaguars’ preseason game against the Saints, head coach Urban Meyer took a lot of heat for keeping quarterback Trevor Lawrence in harm’s way.
When the Jaguars used the No. 1 overall pick,
They intended to get a generational quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick on Trevor Lawrence.
The most difficult thing would be getting him through his rookie season without injury.
Unfortunately for Jaguars fans, the preseason has already demonstrated Lawrence’s vulnerability.
At this rate, he might not even make it through the season.
Lawrence was thrown around during Monday’s preseason game against the Saints.

While battling to get the offense rolling, he went 14-of-23 for 113 yards.
While Trevor Lawrence’s performance was subpar, NFL Twitter was more concerned about his health if head coach Urban Meyer insisted on keeping him in the game.

He shouldn’t expect anything less than 100% from his young quarterback.
Meyer must recognize that he lacks a functional offensive line capable of protecting his most important weapon.

Given the Jaguars’ roster, it’s possible that he’d be better off not being in the firing line every week.
The former Clemson Tiger will play one more preseason game against the Cowboys to acclimate to the NFL level.
It will become much more real when the Jaguars face the Texans to start the season.

AJ McCarron, the Falcons’ quarterback, was ‘heartbroken’ after suffering a knee injury against the Dolphins.

According to ESPN’s Michael Rothstein, Atlanta Falcons backup quarterback AJ McCarron will have an MRI on Sunday after suffering a right knee injury against the Miami Dolphins on Saturday.
After the game, Falcons head coach Arthur Smith revealed the team is expecting awful news on quarterback Matt Ryan’s injured knee.
“I have a lot of sympathy for AJ McCarron,” Smith remarked.
“It’s tough when something like that happens and it’s non-contact when you know what these men put into it.”
I’m sorry for AJ.
We’ll have an MRI to make sure, but he’s devastated.
“He had rebounded back and he was out there battling for his team and trying to get the extra yards,” said McCarron, who was hurt in the first quarter of the Dolphins’ 37-17 loss on Saturday.
It’s unclear if he was hurt on a seven-yard run or on the next snap’s non-contact play.
Since being chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2014, the 30-year-old has bounced around the league.
He played with the Bengals for three seasons before joining the Raiders in 2018 and then the Texans in 2019 and 2020.
McCarron has completed 62.6% of his throws for 1,173 yards and six touchdowns versus three interceptions in 17 outings.
In Saturday’s game, Feleipe Franks took McCarron’s spot.
The Falcons have only three quarterbacks on the roster, so McCarron will have to be replaced this week.
According to Spotrac, signal-callers Robert Griffin III, Josh McCown, and Blake Bortles are among those still available.

Preview, team news, and predictions for the New York Giants vs. Cleveland Browns game on August 22nd, 2021.

The New York Giants have endured a grueling training camp, which has already resulted in two brawls.
One was against their own offense and defense, which left starting quarterback Daniel Jones at the bottom of the standings.
Joe Judge, the head coach of the New York Giants, made the entire team run as if they were in training to be Navy SEALs.
The second incident occurred on Friday, when New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard and Cleveland Browns cornerback Troy Hill threw punches at each other during a joint practice ahead of their preseason matchup in Week 2.
New York may struggle in their upcoming game based on joint practices.
Cleveland produced a scoring drive during 11-on-11 drills, while the Giants had a quick three-and-out.
After today’s joint practices, #Giants WR Sterling Shepard and #Browns CB Troy Hill squared up and were ready to throw punches.
John Ross appears to have stepped in and gotten Shepard out of there.
This is the final few seconds.

Joe Judge has yet to make a decision on the playing time of other starters, including quarterback Daniel Jones.
CB Keion Crossen, CB Josh Jackson ll, and OL Ted Larsen, all new roster additions, could see plenty of action.
After suffering a concussion, QB Clayton Thorson was dismissed and replaced by QB Brian Lewerke, who should play the most of the second half.

With Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. presumably out, expect WR Donovan Peoples-Jones to continue to shine on the field.
DT Malik McDowell (who might be cut by Tuesday if he doesn’t make an impact) and LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (who is hoping to rise up the depth chart after leading the club in tackles last week) are two players to keep an eye on on defense.
Cleveland Browns 27-17 Cleveland Browns The Browns are 4.5-point favorites at -200 to win the game.
They have a chance to win by at least ten points.
After leading the Browns in tackles and tackles for loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars (8 tackles, 3 TFL, 1 sack), rookie LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah could be the game’s MVP.
After a total of 28 carries for 41 yards (1.6 yards per carry), Cleveland’s run game has to improve.
When they sort out the bottom of their WR depth chart in the second half, the New York Giants are expected to throw the ball more.
With Barkley out, RB Corey Clement could get a plenty of carries in the first quarter.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is expected to start the season opener against the Buccaneers despite his ailment.

Dak Prescott, the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, is expected to return to the field for the team’s season opener on September 1.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Buccaneers are favored by nine points.
Prescott, 28, had a right latissimus strain during training camp and is still rehabbing from an ankle issue from last season.
According to Pelissero, the two-time Pro Bowler has had no “setbacks” in his rehabilitation and might have participated in Saturday’s preseason game against the Texans.
Prescott, on the other hand, will not take any chances and will only toss before the game.
Prescott’s recent update debunks ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s claim that the quarterback might not play at 100% this season.
“He’s not entirely recovered yet.”
“He might not be back all season,” Schefter remarked during halftime of the Chiefs-Cardinals game on ESPN.
Bishop: Dak Prescott’s Heal Turn During the offseason, Prescott signed a four-year, $160 million deal.
Prior to his ankle injury in October,
Prescott started five games versus the Giants and threw for 1,856 yards and nine touchdowns.
Before the injury, he was averaging roughly 372 passing yards per game.
In 2019, he threw for 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns in his final complete season.
According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy stated this week that there’s a significant chance Prescott won’t play in the preseason as Dallas prepares for the regular season.
McCarthy added, “He’ll undoubtedly be involved in some type of practice more than this week.”
“But to stand here and say you he’d be full-go and take all the reps, I’m not there yet.” Prescott told NFL Network last week that he wanted to participate in the Cowboys’ joint practice with the Rams and that he expects to play during the regular season.
“I felt like I could go out here,” Prescott said. “Especially when you’ve got the crowd going and the excitement, your adrenaline’s pumping, and you don’t want to miss a day like this.”
“But I’m in terrific shape, and I’ll be ready when it counts.” More NFL coverage:

Urban Meyer of the Jaguars has a deadline to name either Trevor Lawrence or Gardner Minshew as the starting quarterback.

When Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell say that rookie and first-round draft pick Trevor Lawrence isn’t a certainty to be the team’s starting quarterback over Gardner Minshew when the Jaguars open the regular season against the Houston Texans on Sept. 1, practically no one believes them.
Meyer told reporters on Friday that he’s still talking about the depth chart with Bevell and passing-game coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, and that he thinks he knows when he’ll make his final decision for Week 1.
Meyer told ESPN’s Michael DiRocco, “I do [have a timeline] in my head, but it’s a daily dialogue that the three individuals are having.”
“It could [continue until the last preseason game], but I’d rather not.”
To prevent injury concerns, coaches throughout the NFL are expected to bench their starters that weekend.
Meyer said he’ll select which of his two best quarterbacks will start Monday’s exhibition game against the New Orleans Saints on Saturday.
Meyer appears to be seeking to boost Minshew’s trade market value through a competition that few are taking seriously.
Nevertheless, given that this is the same coach who felt giving Tim Tebow reps at tight end this summer wasn’t a complete waste of time, everyone should think he’s serious about anointing Minshew as the starting quarterback before Labor Day.

Cam Newton stakes his claim as the Patriots’ No. 1 quarterback in two more games on Friday.

Bill Belichick is expected to take his time revealing whether Cam Newton or Mac Jones will be the Patriots’ starting quarterback, according to Damien Woody.
(0:57) The second full week of preseason play begins on Thursday, the first of five consecutive days of NFL action.
With only two games remaining until the regular season begins, expect to see more starters and familiar names on the field this week.
The New England Patriots traveled to Philadelphia to play the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, a game in which Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was scratched due to sickness, and the Patriots won.
Two more games begin on Friday, including the season’s first ESPN telecast.
The game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Arizona Cardinals is also a collegiate reunion, with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes facing off against Kliff Kingsbury, his Texas Tech coach — at least for a series or two.
The majority of the action takes place on Saturday, with ten games scheduled.
The day begins with a matchup between the Buffalo Bills and the Chicago Bears in the afternoon, followed by a matchup between the New York Jets and the Green Bay Packers in the evening.
In real time, Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson could be seen fanboying Packers great Aaron Rodgers.
The Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys face off in Jerry World, while the Las Vegas Raiders (probably the most popular team in Los Angeles) face off against the Los Angeles Rams (who are vying for the title).
Odell Beckham Jr. is a wide receiver who plays for the New York Giants
On Sunday, the New York Giants take on the Cleveland Browns in one of two games, while Trevor Lawrence makes his Monday Night Football debut (kind of) when the Jacksonville Jaguars visit the New Orleans Saints.
Skip to a matchup: NE-PHI NFL preseason Week 2 schedule Thursday’s game Standout performer: Patriots QB Cam Newton: 8 of 9 passing for 103 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
Newton looked as at ease as he has as a Patriot, albeit against the Eagles’ second-string defense, with his 28-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jakobi Meyers coming after Meyers gave him a hand signal to indicate his intentions before the snap.
From a pre-snap communication aspect, this indicates a quarterback and wide receiver who are at the top of their game.
Nevertheless, in relief, Mac Jones had some memorable highlights, including a 17-play, 91-yard drive that ate up 9:04 of the clock.
Jones completed 13 of 19 passes for 146 yards on four drives.
— Mike Reiss Up next: Giants (6 p.m.)
29) DeVonta Smith, a rookie receiver, made his preseason debut and had two catches for 19 yards on four targets in one half of action.
The fact that Smith moved smoothly and didn’t appear to be hampered by the left MCL sprain that kept him out of practice for two weeks was far more important than the stat line.
On his second grab of the night, he started inside, hit the brakes, and cut back out for a 10-yard reception, exhibiting flashes of his Heisman Trophy-winning prowess.
Smith’s night began with a couple of drops on a pair of poor passes from Joe Flacco (who started in place of an ill Jalen Hurts), but he smoothed out as the game proceeded and sprang open quite routinely.
Overall, it was a good warmup for the regular season opening against the Atlanta Falcons on September 1st.
— Tim McManus Up next: Jets (7:30 p.m.)
27) Friday’s games, 8 p.m., Kansas City at Arizona
8 p.m. ET, ESPN Cincinnati vs. Washington

‘It’s my time,’ Andy Dalton says of the Bears’ quarterback competition with Justin Fields.

Justin Fields, a rookie quarterback, wowed the Bears crowd with a two-touchdown performance in his preseason debut on Sunday, but not everyone is ready to crown him the starter just yet. Kamil Krzaczynski/USA TODAY Sports
On Tuesday, Andy Dalton addressed his rivalry with Fields for the starting job, and he isn’t ready to relinquish his role ahead of Week 1.
“[Fields] is going to have his time and he’s going to have a wonderful career,” Dalton said. “[Fields] is going to have his time and he’s going to have a great career,” Dalton said.
“But for now, it’s my turn, so my emphasis is on being the greatest player I can be for this club,” Dalton said. The Bears meet the Rams in Week 1, so Dalton might be able to keep Fields on the bench, but it’s hard to picture Chicago sticking with the veteran quarterback into 2021.
As a starter, Dalton has a mediocre 74-66-2 record, averaging less than seven yards per attempt in three of the last four seasons.
Fields joins the Bears after being chosen with the No. 1 overall pick.
11th overall pick in the NFL draft in 2021
In two seasons at Ohio State, he made 22 starts and threw for 63 touchdowns while completing 64.8% of his passes.

Is Justin Fields on his way to become the Bears’ starting quarterback?

Justin Fields has made a lot of noise in his first NFL training camp, and he’ll have even more chances to do so this week in practice.
Fields will receive additional experience with the offensive starters and against the No. 1 defense, according to Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy.
This week, there is only one defense.
The idea is “part of the assessment process,” according to Nagy, who has stated throughout the offseason that Andy Dalton will start for the Bears in Week 1.
Many supporters, however, want to see Fields receive a chance after his preseason and practice performances.
When asked about the situation on Monday, Nagy looked unsure about anointing Dalton the Week 1 starter, though he did indicate Dalton is still the starting quarterback.
“I believe Andy had six plays (in the first preseason game),” says the coach.
With six plays, it’s difficult to say much good or bad.
“We’re going to get him some more snaps this preseason game,” Nagy stated, according to NFL.com’s Kevin Patra.
“And with Justin, I’ll go back to what I said earlier: we want to be able to view live plays and situations, and he’s got that.”
The only thing he can do now is keep doing it, and we must ensure that our strategy allows us to assess how effectively he performs in light of those circumstances.
In the end, we’re going to do whatever is best for the Chicago Bears.” Fields completed 14 of 20 throws for 142 yards and a touchdown in Chicago’s exhibition victory over the Miami Dolphins.
In addition, the former Ohio State standout carried for 33 yards and a touchdown.
Fans saw one play in particular (video here) that demonstrated his ability to create nightmares for defenses.
Nagy is likely to adhere to his plan of starting Dalton in Week 1 as planned.
Dalton, on the other hand, will almost definitely have to play well and win games in order to keep his job.
Nagy will be under a lot of pressure to give Fields a chance if the veteran struggles.
