Ronnie Lott was driven by the murmurs of prior NFL greats when he was ranked No. 19 — ‘He was a destroyer.’

The Athletics’ initiative to select the 100 greatest players in football history is known as the NFL 100.
We’ll reveal new members of the list every day until the season starts, starting with the No.
On Wednesday, September 1st, one player will be crowned.
8.”Get off my grass!” grumpy old men have been yelling since after WWII, when suburban lawns began to sprout across the American landscape.
In the late 1970s, a teen Ronnie Lott received the treatment in a posh Los Angeles neighborhood, and as tough as he was, it sent shivers down his spine.
That’s because the message wasn’t delivered by a doddery old man with a pair of pruning shears.
Lott had just begun off at USC,”I must have been 18 or 19,” he said. He and roommate Marcus Allen had heard about a massive party Brown was hosting in Beverly Hills and decided to see if they could get in.
Lott recalls queuing outside with a swarm of would-be partygoers expecting to bask in the radiance of Brown, who had been out of football for more than a decade and had lately appeared in films alongside Raquel Welch and Jacqueline Bisset.
Lott felt a strong tap on his shoulder at that point.
“Hey!” he said as he looked up and saw Brown.
Get out of my lawn!
During a phone conversation with The Athletic, Lott recalled two events.
Lott took in the man’s pure magnificence — the big hands, the boulder-like shoulders — and realized the amount of work he’d have to put in to become an NFL legend in his own right.

The NFL community responds to Cam Newton’s hot start for the Patriots in Week 2 of preseason.

Despite the absence of key defensive line starters, the Eagles continued to put pressure on Newton, forcing him to step up in the pocket and slither around to make consistent throws.
In the past, the former NFL MVP has had a reputation for taking off running.
Newton stood in the pocket, easily moved around when the pressure was on, and confidently threw strikes all over the field, whether it was to defend himself during a low-stakes exhibition match or as a sign of actual improvement.
Although signing with the Patriots late in the offseason, Newton still managed a 7-8 record as a starter despite having a scarcity of skill-position personnel at his disposal.
Plus, he was sick with COVID-19 during the season and wasn’t himself afterwards.
Thus, if Newton is the great teammate and leader the Patriots have praised since he arrived, it stands to reason that he’ll be even better in 2021.
To be clear, there’s no reason to overreact to what happens in the preseason, but the specific circumstances of Newton’s situation last year, the harsh criticism he received, and Jones’ presence all play a role here.
It was a high-pressure situation, and Newton rose to the occasion.
Cam Newton has been lauded by the NFL community for his excellent preseason performance against the Panthers.

Quiz on the AP First-Team All-Pro Tight Ends

Jacksonville’s Tim Tebow experiment has come to an end.
The Jaguars confirmed on Tuesday that they have parted ways with the 34-year-old quarterback-turned-tight end.
Tebow’s release comes just days after he had not one, but two laughably bad block attempts in a preseason game against the New York Jets.
the Browns of Cleveland
As one might assume, the NFL world, as well as head coach Urban Meyer and even Tebow himself, had a few things to say about the conclusion of Tebow’s tenure in Duval.
This will most likely be “Tim Tebow, NFL player’s” final appearance, but who knows, maybe a team will invite him to camp next offseason merely to increase jersey sales.
Which leads us to the topic of today’s quiz.
While Tebow the tight end did not have the opportunity to make an impact on the game, others from that position have.
Only 23 tight ends have been named to the Associated Press All-Pro First Team in the NFL’s history.
So, how many of these all-time greats can you name in five minutes with that in mind?
Best of luck!

Should you invest in a Clyde Edwards-Helaire post-hype breakthrough in your fantasy football draft?

Clyde Edwards-Helaire was regarded as one of the best running back prospects for the 2020 NFL Draft.
The question was whether the LSU standout’s skillset would transition to the NFL in a three-down role, or if he’d need the ideal landing site.
When the Kansas City Chiefs picked Edwards-Helaire with the 32nd overall choice in the first round, it gave the entire football world cause to believe.
The 5-foot-7, 207-pound rushing back might have made an impact in the NFL regardless of where he landed, but the Chiefs were seen as the best-case scenario by many because of their high-powered offense and head coach Andy Reid’s track record with running backs.
After teammate Damien Williams opted out of the 2020 season, Edwards-Helaire’s stock skyrocketed, giving the rookie a clear road to three-down work.

In October, the All Blacks will face the Philadelphia Eagles at the NFL stadium in Washington.

In October, the New Zealand All Blacks will meet the United States at FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins of the National Football League.
The game on October 23 takes place a week before the Eagles take on Ireland at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, another NFL site.
The United States is bidding to host the men’s Rugby World Cup in 2027 or 2031, using NFL and collegiate facilities.
It’s also bidding for the 2029 women’s tournament.
The 1874 Cup, named after the year Harvard and McGill University from Canada played the first rugby game in the United States, will be played at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, just outside the District of Columbia.
“Every time we’ve gone [to the US], we’ve really loved it,” All Blacks captain Sam Cane remarked.
I know the team is looking forward to visiting America, especially coming to Washington, DC for the first time.” In 2014, the All Blacks defeated the USA 74-6 in front of a sellout crowd of 61,000 at Soldier Field, the Chicago Bears’ home stadium.
They returned in 2016, but were defeated by Ireland 40-29.
“We’ve had a number of excellent experiences in the US, albeit with one disappointing outcome against Ireland in 2016,” their head coach, Ian Foster, stated.
But our match against the USA in 2014 was particularly remarkable, with the crowd erupting in applause and enormous interest in the All Blacks.
So hopefully it’ll be another opportunity to build rugby in New Zealand.” New Zealand is ranked No. 2 in the world, behind South Africa.
Gary Gold’s Eagles are now ranked 16th.
They pushed a young England squad before falling 43-29, and then lost 71-10 to an Ireland team that also lacked Lions players.
This fall, the United States will host Canada in Glendale, Colorado for World Cup qualifications.
“It’ll be wonderful to finish off our fall Test season against the All Blacks,” Gold added.
“It’s no secret that this club is, and has been, one of the finest in the world, and the chance to play head-to-head at home is special.” Major League Rugby, the US professional league, will finish on Saturday with a championship game between the LA Giltinis and Rugby ATL from Atlanta.
The game will take place in the Coliseum in Los Angeles.
Wales defeated South Africa 22-20 in a one-off Test match at RFK Stadium in Washington in 2018.
Events DC president Gregory A. ODell claimed his business was working “with our friends at Old Glory DC,” an MLR team associated with Scottish Rugby, and was looking forward to “attracting more world-class rugby to our nation’s capital, including the Rugby World Cup.”
Mayor Muriel Bowser was “eager to welcome this significant international rugby Test match to Washington DC,” according to Deputy Mayor John Falcicchio.
DC is the Sports Capital, with championship-winning teams and expertise hosting major sporting events.
In fall, we hope to join locals and visitors in honoring our rugby all-stars.”

Clay Travis is against mandatory vaccinations for NFL players and other athletes.

On Friday night, Clay Travis, co-host of “The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show,” appeared on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” to discuss his thoughts on coronavirus rules in sports.
RICK DENNISON, VIKINGS COACH, IS OUT AFTER REFUSING TO GET THE COVID VACCINE: REPORT CLAY TRAVIS: The NFL is going about it the wrong way.
These are healthy, young players.
They should be immunized if they wish to.
We don’t have to keep testing all of these players if they don’t want to.
Covid isn’t a threat to them.
I understand that some people are offended by this, but it is an important message in the world of athletics.
We no longer need to be concerned.
We have the information.
You are not at risk from Covid if you are young and healthy and participate in sports.
Now, if you feel in danger, you can be vaccinated, but I don’t believe any of these policies are necessary.
